The Japan Institute of Wastewater Engineering and Technology (JIWET) is a public interest incorporated foundation established in September, 1992.
Since its establishment, while accumulating knowledge and experience from the academic world, private sector and public sector, JIWET has carried out investigation, research, development and evaluation activities to solve numerous issues concerning sewerage services and striven to disseminate the results of those activities in society. Many of our achievements thus made have been utilized nationwide.
Currently, in Japan, sewer systems have been installed widely as part of public infrastructure and many people benefit from them. However, there still remain a considerable number of issues, such as response to disasters like floods, earthquakes, etc., the alteration and reconstruction of aging facilities that continually increase in number and the early eradication of regions left without sewerage via efficient installation planning. In the meantime, various other concerns keep arising. For example, to realize a low-carbon society, it is necessary to reuse outputs from wastewater as a resource as well as to reduce CO2 emission from business activities and to promote energy saving. New technology is yet to be developed to respond to those needs. In addition, to solve global issues, international cooperation should be promoted by communicating the past achievements to the world.
While making efforts to meet such new demands, JIWET has been working vigorously on the research and development, evaluation of technology and investigation to solve issues. By disseminating and raising awareness of the progress thus made in society, it keeps promoting the public good including international cooperation.
